Wednesday, 12 June 2019
The University's Occupational Health Manager, Dawn Grout, has been awarded the Queen’s Nursing Institute award. The award has been given in recognition of her "commitment to improving standards of care in the community and to learning and leadership".
The Queen’s Nursing Institute is a professional standards body which recognises excellence in addition to the registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council that allows Dawn to practice. Part of the award process was to have support from two clients she had seen recently.
We caught up with Dawn to hear a bit more about here role: "I'm very happy to be recognised with this award from the Queen’s Nursing Institute. Occupational health is all about how work impacts on health and how health impacts on work. I enjoy my work at the University as there is a variety of challenges. The mix of management and clinical duties keeps my skill set up to date and allows to do what I enjoy: being a nurse.
"I have a background in medical and surgical nursing but I have been involved in occupational health nursing since 2001. The University is unusual in that it has its own in-house nurse-led occupational health service and this creates opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of our employees.
"A key benefit of the in-house service is that it allows us to build closer relationships with key stakeholders and have a knowledge of the context people are working in. This makes for a more rapid initial response and feedback and/or recommendations, which we benchmark against the higher education practitioner’s forum."
The occupational health service is impartial and confidential, you can find out more about the service on the Occupational Health webpage.
