International Women's Day 2019 - #BalanceforBetter
Friday, 08 March 2019
Today, Friday 8 March 2019, marks the 110th International Women’s Day. This year’s campaign theme #BalanceforBetter promotes building a gender balanced world and is running today as well as through the year to improve gender equality in government, media coverage and employment. The global event celebrates women’s achievements across the University of Reading and worldwide as well as raising awareness of gender inequalities.
At the University we are marking this significant day in a number of ways. We have created short films documenting three women’s particular experiences at the University and their journeys of personal and career growth.
If you are unable to access the video above, it is also available on University's YouTube channel.
Springboard women’s development programme aims to improve women’s confidence in the workplace and in their personal lives. Entry deadline for the next cohort is Friday 22 March and the details on the application process can be found here. Another development program Aurora seeks to address the underrepresentation of woman in leadership roles in Higher Education. More information is available here. Professor Uma Kambhampati (Head of School of Economics) also explores raising a family whilst growing in a profession.
Dr Jacqui Turner, a Lecturer in Modern History here at the University will be speaking at the Houses of Parliament on 12 March in recognition of Nancy Astor, the first female Member of Parliament. Elected 100 years ago in 1919. Nancy Astor held the position of MP for Plymouth Sutton until 1945 and was an advocate for women’s rights and equality between genders. Because of the lecture’s popularity, tickets are no longer available.
