Open Doors UK event at the Health and Life Sciences building
Wednesday, 27 March 2019
Last Tuesday (19 March) colleagues had the opportunity to visit the new Health and Life Sciences building as part of Open Doors Week. This is a nationwide event which allows people access to construction sites. Colleagues from across functions and schools were given an introduction from the Balfour Beatty project lead Jeff Carter. This was followed tour on site in which colleagues got the first glimpse of the space they will be working in or taking care of in the new building.
The exterior shell of the building is will shortly be completed but there is plenty of progress on the interior. Including the fitting of the (unusually large amount) of mechanical and electrical services, all of which will be invisible in the finished building. These are nearing completion and, once the building is watertight, internal walls will start to be installed making the finished layout of the rooms.
With the completion of the main structure construction is on track to be completed in late 2019. The project demonstrates the University commitment to 2026: TRANSFORM capital investment programme, with £60m being invested to bring about closer integration of the school.
