Network Week - Women at Reading
Tuesday, 07 May 2019
The Women@Reading network is co-ordinated by a small committee that provides direction, builds awareness, organises events and acts as a conduit for representation of issues to the University. The committee would welcome more members, including allies and champions.
The network blends informational exchange and activism to ensure that the University sets and meets appropriate targets on gender equality and acknowledges that progress has been made in this area. For example, the changes made to the personal titles process has made for much more equitable promotion.
We caught up with the chair of the network Dr Claire Collins to find out more:
“The first thing to say is that this network is for everyone – it’s great for people to come and try it. We want to get ideas from as wide a range of people as possible as to different events or initiatives we can try in the future. Especially those that will inform and build a community and that will support development of careers.
“I’m motivated to make the University a place that welcomes everyone and celebrates their talents, whatever they might be. By not pursuing equality we disenfranchise women and my long-standing passion for equality lead me to become part of this network.
“We run regular events that have be extended from one hour events to also include 30 minutes just for networking to help with getting to know each other and developing support. Women@Reading events are open to all colleagues and are advertised on the Staff Portal and in In Brief.”
Their next event is the Crafternoon Tuesday 14 May 14:00-16:00, G09, Allen Lab, Whiteknights campus. If you would like to attend please or sign up to receive the Women@Reading newsletter, contactLynn Moore.
