Awards & Prizes
- Led by Dr Emma Mayhew (Academic Director) and Shelley Connor (Programme Management Consultant), the team behind our Electronic Management of Assessment (EMA) Programme have been awarded a Blackboard Catalyst Award for ‘Optimising Student Experience’ in the Blackboard Catalyst Awards for Europe
- Dr Federico Faloppa (Modern Languages) has been appointed by Amnesty International Italy as research lead for a new centre of excellence for monitoring hate speech online and offline
- The Centre for Quality Support and Development are pleased to announce the winners of the University Teaching & Learning Enhancement Projects: Mini Awards 2019
- The RUSU Partnership in Teaching & Learning Showcase took place this month, with colleagues and students honoured for going above and beyond expectations to improve the teaching and learning experience
- The shortlist for this year’s Research Engagement and Impact Awards has been announced. Twelve projects have been selected and will be showcased at the Awards Ceremony on 25 June 2019. Register for the event here
- Professor Annalisa Marzano (Classics) has been awarded the title of Guangqi Fellow by the Guangqi International Centre for Scholars at Shanghai Normal University, in recognition of her ‘dedication, passion, and contribution to scholarship and international collaboration’
- Professor Emily West (History) has been awarded a residential fellowship at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, Monticello. She has also won the Kentucky Historical Society Research Fellowship for 2019 and a Filson Historical Society (Kentucky) Short Fellowship
- Dr Helen Dodd (AnDY clinic) has been awarded a £1.1m UKRI and BEIS grant to study the effect ‘adventurous play’ has on supporting children to build emotional resilience and combat anxiety
- The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust has named the first two departments to be awarded ‘University’ status, as part of the growing partnership between the Trust and the University of Reading
- Dr Alana James (Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences) has been shortlisted for a national award for excellence in teaching, commitment to improving the student experience and dissemination of best practice
- Royal Society Fellow Dr Sofia Gripenberg (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) has had her University Research Fellowship renewed, providing an extra three years funding for her work on tropical forest ecology
- Prof Bhismadev Chakrabarti (Psychology) has been awarded £3.7m from the MRC Global Challenges Research Fund to lead a 5-year project, 'Scalable Transdiagnostic Early Assessment of Mental health (STREAM)' – an international consortium with partners at the universities of Cambridge, Birkbeck, Keele, Liverpool, Harvard and the Indian Institute of Technology and Malawi College of Medicine

Strategic Project Updates
- The work of the team behind our Academic Tutor System was described as ‘sector-leading’ by the UK Advising and Tutoring Group (UKAT), following a presentation on ‘Transforming Academic Tutoring: A Collaborative Work in Progress’ by Jess Johnson and Amanda Millmore at this year’s UKAT conference

- UUK’s MadeAtUni Campaign, the ‘Nation’s Lifesavers’, includes Reading’s AnDY Clinic. The campaign aims to promote the benefits of university research, and the work of the AnDY Clinic will be featured as ‘Faster treatment for childhood anxiety that works’
- Dr Mary Lewis ran an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on the Reddit forum, AskHistorians, answering questions about her research and promoting the new MSc Professional Human Osteoarchaeology programme launching in September. 32,300 individual users viewed the session
- Professor Alastair Culham and Tomos Jones (Botany) were awarded a Gold prize at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for their exhibit 'Ornamental plants: our future invaders'
