Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked each year on 20 November. It is a day on which we celebrate our trans staff and students, but also remember those affected by violence against the trans community in the UK and beyond, particularly over the last year. We will mark the day by a short ceremony at 13:00 as follows.

Flag-raising ceremony and speeches

Wednesday 20 November, 13:00 – 13:30, flagpole between Whiteknights House and the Library.

This event is hosted by Pro -Vice-Chancellor Parveen Yaqoob, Zeid Sharif the RUSU Diversity Officer, and Professor Simon Chandler-Wilde Dean for Diversity and Inclusion. It will feature short speeches from the Pro-Vice-Chancellor on behalf of the University, from the RUSU Diversity Officer and representatives from the LGBT+ Student Society and the LGBT+ Staff Network. Representatives of RUSU and our LGBT+ Staff Network will also read out the names of some of those individuals worldwide who have suffered death from transphobic violence in the last year. All staff and students are welcome to join us to mark this occasion and pay our respects.

Transgender Awareness Training

Wednesday 20 November, 10:00 – 12:00, Chancellors G08

On the same day we are running our regular Trans Awareness Training. This session looks at the range and variety of people who identify in one way or another as Transgender. The variables of gender, sexuality and other aspects are explored and explained, including: What it is like to be Trans; Coming Out; Being Trans in Public; Being Trans at work; How do staff react to trans people? and with time for discussion, questions and answers. Booking via UoRLearn for staff, by email to s.oflynn@reading.ac.uk for students.

Wear a Pronoun Badge

You can also show your support by wearing a University of reading and RUSU Pronoun Badge that were introduced earlier this year. The badges are available from RUSU Reception, and from receptions across the University, in They/Them, He/Him, She/Her versions, plus a version that you can complete as you wish.

Further information on Pronoun Badges and why we introduced them are available in a blog “Pronoun Badges at the University of Reading” that was co-authored by Professor Parveen  Yaqoob, the University Executive Board LGBT+ Champion, with representatives from the LGBT+ network and the Students’ Union.
