Yucky vegetables! Parent and Family Network tackle fussy eating
Tuesday, 01 October 2019
Last week, the newly-established Parent and Family Network held their first coffee morning. This enjoyable event was well attended by colleagues from across the University, who enjoyed lively chat over coffee and cake.
The co-ordinators of the Network, Ellen McManus-Fry and Nicola Hall, explained how its creation was motivated by their recent experiences of returning to work as new mothers, and invited suggestions of the things other people would like to see from the Network.
Professor Carmel Houston-Price from the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences gave an informal and very engaging talk about the ‘number one battle' often faced by parents of young children: mealtimes. We heard about the reasons behind children's reluctance to try new foods (or Food Neophobia), and about familiarisation techniques which could be used to encourage them to eat vegetables, in particular, a series of e-books which are the focus of Professor Houston-Price's current SEE & EAT research project. Colleagues shared their experiences of feeding young (and not so young) children, with varying levels of success, and found out how they could participate in the study themselves.
A second coffee morning will be held next term (details will be available nearer the time). To join the Network and keep up to date on its activities and forthcoming events either contact Ellen McManus-Fry and Nicola Hall or follow this link to the Microsoft Teams group.
