Public Lecture Series: Climate Change: Turning up the Heat on our Health
Wednesday 16 October, 19.30
G10, Palmer building, Whiteknights campus
We all know that climate change is damaging our planet - but what about us? Our hearts, lungs and other vital organs are damaged by air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels, and climate change worsens this effect. Vulnerable people, including the elderly, are at risk from extreme heatwaves like the one we saw in 2017 - and climate science predicts that these events will happen more often in future as the world warms.
In this lecture, Environmental Economist Professor Elizabeth Robinson brings together stories and observations with hard data to show the impact of climate change on human health over time. Building on her involvement in The Lancet Countdown, which tracks the positive health benefits of the world's efforts to reduce climate change, she makes a powerful argument for keeping climate change in check - not just for the planet's sake, but for the sake of our health.

Friday 18 October, 18.30
The Great Hall, London Road campus
The venerable BBC Radio 4 institution that is ‘Any Questions?' comes to the University of Reading on Friday 18 October. The broadcast has been arranged by the Politics and International Relations Department and will be open to an audience of 200 people from across the university and local community. Following Jonathan Dimbleby's retirement this summer, the programme will have a new host as members of the audience put questions to four high-profile figures from the world of politics. With new Conservative and Lib Dem Leaders in place, and with the next planned Brexit departure date just 13 days later, this is bound to be an evening of high stakes political debate.
