Awards & Prizes
- Professor Sue Grimmond (Meteorology) has been awarded EUR3 million of a EUR 12.7 million grant from the European Research Council for the Urbisphere project, which will seek to better understand how cities and people are influencing the urban climate, and vice versa.
- Dr James Hall (Pharmacy) and Professor Christine Cardin (Chemistry) have been awarded EU Horizon 2020 training network funding for research on nucleic acid modification.
Strategic Project Updates
- The ongoing work of the Curriculum Framework is entering the taught postgraduate review phase, now that undergraduate programmes have moved into the implementation phase of their reviews. The PGT review phase will run for two academic years.
News
- Chris Skidmore, Minister of State for Universities, Science Research and Innovation, visited Whiteknights campus last Friday. He spoke to staff and students after meeting climate, weather and environmental scientists, toured the new Health & Life Sciences Building, and launched a weather balloon with experts from our Department of Meteorology.
- The term's first ‘Share a Sofa' event took place last week. Over 50 questions were submitted to the full-time RUSU Officers by our students, who then posed a selection to Deputy-Vice Chancellor, Professor Gavin Brooks. A video of the session will be shared on social media shortly.
- We have recently seen our one millionth enrolment on our online courses programme after launching our first MOOC,Begin Programming, backin October 2013 - which was one of the first to run on the social learning FutureLearn platform.
- On 31 October, Poet and former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen will read three new poems during a Halloween event for children at the British Museum inspired by objects from the AHRC-funded Grave Goods project co-led by Dr Duncan Garrow (Archaeology).
- Passages, a film directed by Dr LúciaNagib (Film, Theatre and Television),was screened at the São Paulo International Film Festival on 25 October and was followed by a debate including Brazilian filmmakers Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener) and Lírio Ferreira (Perfumed Ball, Árido Movie).
- Dr Ruth Evans (Geography) has co-authored with UROP student Olivia Bridger a new report on social isolation and loneliness in Reading, which was presented to Reading Borough Council's multi-agency steering group on loneliness and social isolation on 17 October.
- Professor Jane Setter (English Literature) has written a new book, ‘Your voice speaks volumes: it's not what you say, but how you say it', which reveals the kind of judgements we make about other's voices without even noticing and why English has such a wide range of accents and accent prejudices.
- Dr Matthew Lickiss (Typography) has published a monograph, Design Perspectives on Multimodal Documents: System, Medium, and Genre Relations.
- Dr Mara Oliva (History) has been elected Chair of the US Foreign Policy Group of the British International Studies Association.
