Professor Gavin Brooks to leave in December
Wednesday, 04 September 2019
Our Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching & Learning), Professor Gavin Brooks, will be leaving at the end of December to take up the post of Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Buckinghamshire New University from 1 January 2020.
Since joining the University of Reading in 1999, Gavin has served as Founding Head of the School of Pharmacy, Head of the School of Biological Sciences and as Dean of Science. In 2011, he was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching & Learning) and in 2018 he took on the additional role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor. As well as providing leadership and support for our team of T&L Deans, Gavin also leads our Student Services, Estates and Technical Services functions, and has played a pivotal role in the development of our campus in Malaysia, most recently as Chair of the RUMAL Board.
Reflecting on his decision to move on after a full 21 years of service, Gavin said: ‘It has been a privilege and pleasure for me to have been a small part of such a great University, which has afforded me significant opportunity to fulfil many of my academic ambitions. Whilst I am delighted to be taking on this new role, I shall be very sorry to leave Reading and my friends and colleagues here.’
Vice-Chancellor, Robert Van de Noort, said: ‘Gavin has been the driving force behind our Teaching and Learning Strategy and the huge strides we’ve made in this area, and in particular led our participation in the important Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework subject-level pilot. I would like to thank Gavin for his commitment and hard work over so many years at Reading, and I’m looking forward to working with him for a few months yet to ensure a smooth handover of this critical area of work.’
The University Executive Board (UEB) will be reviewing the portfolio associated with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (T&L) role in the light of our emerging new Strategy and external sector developments to consider the best way forward to ensure our continued success in the areas of T&L and the student experience. We expect to be able to confirm these arrangements later in the autumn term and we will keep you updated when we have further news to share.
