Brexit and Settled Status
Wednesday, 18 September 2019
Recent statements by the Government suggesting that freedom of movement will end on 31 October 2019 have added even more uncertainty to what was an already confusing time for all of us, and particularly our non-UK EU colleagues.
I wanted to provide whatever reassurance I can, particularly by confirming that for those colleagues already in the UK the arrangements for “settled status” still apply.
I provided information regarding an HE pilot of these arrangements via the Staff Portal in November last year.
Updated information on applying for settled status is available and I would note that you can now apply for yourself and your family, and there is no fee.
Formally you have up to 31 December 2020 to apply but if you haven’t applied already, in the current circumstances it might be sensible to do so prior to 31 October 2019. Doing so will mean that you are “in the system” which may help for example with entry clearance in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
On a practical note it may also be advisable not to arrange travel over the Brexit date to avoid potential delays and other difficulties should there be a no-deal scenario.
For those of you who might now be making an application for settled status a reminder that there is access to an Android phone (should you require this) in the HR Office. If you need to use this please call ahead on extension 8751 to make an appointment.
