Diversifying Leadership
The University is pleased to invite applications for places for members of staff to attend this development programme in 2020. Details about the Stellar HE programme are here.
The programme is designed to support early career academics and professional services staff from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, up to and including Associate Professor/ Grade 8, who are about to take their first steps into a leadership role.
Comprising of three one-day workshops, plus a facilitated action learning set day, it explores themes of power and influence, demystifying leadership, cultural identity and cultural capital, increasing your visibility and authentic leadership and features leadership stories from high-profile HE leaders.
Participants of the programme will need to identify a sponsor from within the University, usually someone more senior already working in an influential role, who will support them throughout and potentially beyond the duration of the programme.
Participants must be able to:
- attend the orientation webinar on 28 January 2020 and each of the three development dates in London (12/02/20, 11/03/20 and 24/03/20)
- take part in the facilitated action learning set (30/06/20)
- undertake self-directed learning throughout the programme, aligned with developing interests
- commit to working with a sponsor from within the University who is senior, influential and committed to developing them
- be prepared to participate in a longitudinal study to measure the impact of the programme over time.
Please note: If you are unable to attend all the dates above, there may be the opportunity to attend a programme starting in April 2020. Please do submit an application if you could potentially take part in that cohort - we are unable to confirm dates as yet with AdvanceHE but will do so as soon as possible - and clearly note in your covering email that you are interested in the later dates.
Application process
If you are interested in expressing an interest please send the following personal statement, by 17:00 on Monday 4 November 2019, to People Development:
- the personal statement (no more than two sides of A4) which outlines your personal aims and motivations for applying, including the benefits and what you hope to gain from attending. The template contains further guidance on what you should include in your statement.
- details of a named sponsor from the University who will submit a letter of support (we will give them an outline of what this should include should you be successful; click here for more sponsor information). If you would like assistance in approaching someone to sponsor you please indicate this in your application, with thoughts on who this might be and why.
StellarHE Strategic Executive Development Programme for Diverse Leaders in Higher Education
The University is pleased to announce that it is sponsoring places on this year’s StellarHE national development programme and is now inviting applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff who meet the criteria as given in the application form and on the StellarHE website.
StellarHE is a strategic executive development programme for Diverse Leaders (BAME) in Higher Education. Now in its eighth year this programme has been designed specifically to develop and implement leadership strategies that reflect the unique challenges and experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic academic and professional staff across Higher Education.
This development programme is recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management and is sponsored by University College London, City University, Liverpool John Moores University and The University of Manchester.
StellarHE is targeted at BAME individuals who aspire to senior leadership positions in Higher Education. It is aimed at professional support staff, academics and researchers at middle to senior management level. Readiness to embark on an experiential leadership programme and availability to participate in all activities are key criteria for participation on the programme.
Managers of those applying will need to support the application and fully understand their involvement; their active engagement is a critical element of the StellarHE programme. For example, managers need to support participants in identifying their Leadership Challenge project and sharing their learning in the workplace on completion of the formal modules of the training. They will also be invited to a manager briefing teleconference in January 2020 and to attend the Leadership Challenge project presentations on the final day.
The programme dates are listed below, and successful applicants must be able to attend all the dates given. Please note that some dates are residential and the cost of these is included but Heads of School or Function will need to pay for any additional costs, including travel.
- 16 January 2020 - Orientation
- 28 to 29 January 2020 - Module 1 (residential)
- 18 to 19 March 2020 - Module 2 (residential)
- 20 to 21 May 2020 - Module 3 (non-residential)
The programme also includes pre-course work such as reading articles, written assignments and a Leadership Challenge project. The pre-course work typically requires about 2 hours before each workshop.
Further details can be found on the StellarHE website. If you have any queries prior to submitting an application please email People Development.
Completed application forms should be sent to People Development by 17:00 on Monday 4 November 2019 for consideration by the selection panel.
