National Pay Bargaining update
Thursday, 26 September 2019
The Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES) has concluded its discussions in respect of this year’s pay bargaining round, including the formal disputes procedure, without reaching full agreement with the participating trades unions.
In these circumstances the University will now implement the final offer made by the employers’ representatives, Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA). The settlement comprises a base pay uplift of 1.8%, with higher increases for those on the lowest pay scales as part of the commitment to delete spinal points 1 and 2. You can read more detail on the UCEA 2019-20 pay negotiations page.
The University and College Union (UCU) has declared a trade dispute in respect of the outcome of the pay bargaining process, and this forms the basis of one of the two current ballots of UCU members.
The University is wholly committed to the national pay bargaining process, and in common with many others are disappointed that an agreed settlement has not been reached. In these circumstances, we feel strongly that it would be unfair for colleagues to wait any longer than is necessary to receive the pay rise expected from 1 August. We will therefore be implementing the notified adjustment with September salaries, back-dated as appropriate to 1 August.
As on previous occasions, we will honour any further adjustments to the pay award that arise as a consequence of further discussions.
