Awards & Prizes
- The 2019 Celebration of Teaching & Learning Success Awards were held on Wednesday 25 September, in the Meadow Suite. Awards were presented to our new National Teaching Fellows, University Teaching Fellows, T&L Collaborative Award winners, and Academic Practice Programme (APP) Award winners - which are all co-ordinated by the University's Centre for Quality Support and Development (CQSD).
- Three Reading academics have been shortlisted for Times Higher Education Awards 2019:
- Research project of the year (STEM) - Dr Rebecca Emerton and Dr Andrea Ficchi (Geography and Environmental Science): flood forecasting Mozambique cyclones
- Research Project of the year (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) - Professor Rosa Freedman (Law): safeguarding children in peacekeeping operations and conflict zones
- Outstanding teacher of the year - Dr Madeleine Davies (English Literature)
- Professor Adrian Bell (Head of ICMA Centre and Research Dean for Prosperity and Resilience) has been awarded funding of nearly £1m by the AHRC for research bringing together the people and places involved in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381.
- Dr Ellen Pilsworth (Modern Languages & Linguistics) has been awarded a British Academy/Wolfson fellowship for her project ‘Knowing the Nazis, Inside and Out: Anti-Fascist Publishing In Austria, Germany and Britain, 1927-1940'.
- Dr Alanna Skuse (English Literature) has been awarded the Wellcome University Award for her project, ‘What think you of a wound? - wounding oneself in early modern England'.
- Dr Lucy Tyler (Film, Theatre & Television) has been awarded funding by Arts Council England for a second partnership with South Street Arts Centre on an Associate Artist Programme, commissioning six practitioners to create new performance pieces in Reading.
- Professor Gavin Parker, Dr Matthew Wargent and Kat Salter (Built Environment) won the Sir Peter Hall Award for Wider Engagement at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards 2019, in recognition of their extensive research on Neighbourhood Planning.

- Professor Ed Hawkins' (Meteorology) striking global warming climate stripes infographic was featured in boththe Guardianandthe Economistnewspapers on 20 September, ahead of the UN Summit on climate.
- Dr Simone Knox (Film, Theatre and Television) has co-authored a new book ‘Friends - a reading of a sitcom' which was launched on 22 September to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first episode of Friends being aired.
- Academics from across the University took their research to 3,500 members of the public at the Berkshire Show as part of the University of Reading exhibit ‘Spark your senses' on 21 and 22 September.
- Posters of the twelve shortlisted projects from the Research Engagement and Impact Awards went on display in the library foyer on 30 September, which will be accompanied by a series of lunchtime talks over the first two weeks of autumn term by the lead researchers.
- ‘Never closer to midnight', a climate change themed performance by artistJanine Harringtonco-commissioned by the University of Reading andReading Thames Festival took place on 26 September on the University campus and in Reading town centre.
- Professor Jacqui Turner (History) spoke about Astor100, a year of activities celebrating the centenary of Nancy Astor becoming the first female MP to take her seat, at the Conservative Party Conference 29 September.
- Professor Slawomir Nasuto (Biomedical Engineering) has contributed as steering committee member to a Royal Society report, iHuman Perspective: Neural Interfaces, launched 10 September, which takes a future-facing look into possible applications of neural and brain-computer interfaces and explores the potential benefits, risks and ethical considerations of the technologies ( also the subject of an editorial in The Lancet, 20 September).
