The MyName project: wearing our names with pride

What's in a name? An awful lot, as it turns out. Our names are more than just words - they carry our personal identity, family history, cultural heritage, beliefs, goals and so much more. Whether it's the name we were born with or one we have chosen for ourselves, our names should make us proud of who we are. Getting a name wrong, therefore, can have a real impact on an individual's sense of identity and belonging.
The MyName project is here to help celebrate the diversity of our University community through a series of blogs, videos, stories and more. It aims to explore the meaning and the definition behind our names, discover the background and the pronunciation of different names and to really showcase the diversity that exists at the University of Reading.
The project is taking submissions from staff and students, and there are many ways you can get involved:
- Record a short video of yourself talking about your name, how to pronounce it and what it means. Feel free to explain the background of your name, any interesting stories about it and what it means to you on a personal level.
- If you don't want to record a video, you can also submit an audio recording, blog or other style of written content exploring the points above.
The aim will be to share regular videos and stories across our Student Life channels, including the Student Life Blog, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter (lookout for the #MyNameMyStory handle). Videos will also be collated in a dedicated YouTube paylist.
