We'll be handing out free coffee and cake* and holding two special exhibitions. exploring the Library's history and the subject behind one of our most celebrated research collections, literary icon Samuel Beckett.
You'll also have the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the Library and see its new and improved facilities following its recent £40 million refurbishment.
Exhibitions
Two special exhibitions will be displayed within the Library from 24 February until 6 March (weekdays, 09:00-17:00):
- The History of the Library: An illustrated history charting how the Library has changed over the decades, from the 1920s to the present day.
- Samuel Beckett Collection: As you may know, the University is home to the world's largest Samuel Beckett archive. Discover more about the Samuel Beckett Archive and our other Special Collections in this specially commissioned exhibition.
Celebrating our University Library
"As our only source of information, it became a wonderful friend, contributing massively to our academic development and success"
Jim Burrows, alumni (Geography, 1964-67)
While libraries may not be the only source of information these days, the words of one of our former students certainly still rings true. The University Library is more than just a building - it's a fellow accomplice to learn from and be inspired by. Its presence on campus is unique, and we're really excited about the new possibilities its recent refurbishment will bring.
As detailed in our special exhibition, the Library was originally situated at London Road, in the building that now houses the School of Architecture. As the University expanded it was eventually relocated to Whiteknights campus in the 1960s, where is has been ever since.
The latest major refurbishment set out to improve key features such as study space, sustainability and a new larger café. It continues to offer 24-hour access and support during term time** and is proving to be one of the most popular areas of Whiteknights campus.
We look forward to celebrating the Library with you on Monday 24 February!
*Limited to one per person. We encourage you to bring your own reusable cup, but paper cups will also be provided.
