RISE: supporting diversity at Reading
Tuesday, 03 March 2020
We are pleased to offer a new learning programme to all staff across the University- RISE@University of Reading.
The RISE@TM programme will support you so that you are Ready for an Inclusive and Supportive Environment at the University of Reading.
Promoting and supporting diversity in the workplace is intrinsically about valuing everyone in the organisation as an individual. To reap the benefits of a diverse workforce, it is vital to have an inclusive environment where everyone feels able to participate.
This programme has been jointly developed by People Development, Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Allan Laville and The Pacific Institute.
The Pacific Institute is a global consultancy specialising in creating mind sets for high performance. Working together with them, we have designed a customised programme grounded in psychological theory and research, supported by practical and accessible exercises, placing the individual at the centre of learning.
A few colleagues have taken part in a pilot version of the programme and found it really helpful. Lina Johansson, HR Administrator, said:
“RISE@ helped me look at Diversity and Inclusion in a much broader sense and made me realise that sometimes exclusion is more about our own need to feel included rather than a need for keeping other people out. I would recommend RISE@ for helping you look at Diversity and Inclusion from a different perspective.”
Halima Mahmudova, HR Administrator, said:
“The training is designed for everyone, really interesting and engaging. I really enjoyed the style and content and that the information can be used in every aspect of life, not only at work. Having a diverse collaboration group helped us to discuss the topics from different viewpoints.”
Programme Aims
The RISE@ programme is open to all colleagues across the University that are interested in building and promoting a diverse and inclusive culture at the University of Reading. Participants will first focus on themselves as individuals, and then on the wider organisation. By the end of the programme participants will have the skills to:
- Embrace inclusivity by confidently role modelling University behaviours and values, including the 3Rs
- Actively address and promote a diverse workforce
- Develop and achieve their full potential
- Foster, create and develop effective networks
- Set clear, practical goals, both personal and career
