Annual Meteorology Photography Competition

Thursday, 04 March 2010

Storm clouds at sunset

Storm clouds at sunset, taken in Omaha, by Samantha Palin

At last we are able to bring you the results of the University's 8th annual meteorology photography competition that took place in the autumn term 2009.  The competition was open to all members of the University, and attracted over 80 entries.

As per previous years, entries were divided into two categories: ‘Weather and optical phenomena' and ‘Sunsets and dawns', and consisted of photos taken both in the UK and in various different locations around the world.  The winning photos were voted for by the members of the Meteorology department.

The winner of the ‘Weather and optical phenomena' category was Samantha Palin, an MSc student in Food Technology, with her atmospheric photo of storm clouds at sunset, taken in Omaha, Nebraska. The winner of the ‘Sunsets and dawns' category was Alex Whittingham, an MSc student in the Soil Science department, with his spectacular sunset photo taken at Vitu Levu in Fiji.

We will alternate the two photographs during the day so that you have a chance to see both winning entries.

The runners-up were Charlie Williams and Mike Blackburn, both members of staff in the Meteorology department, and Calum MacColl, an undergraduate student from the Meteorology department.

Thank you to all those who entered.
