Deafax CEO to skydive for charity
Tuesday, 09 March 2010
Helen Lansdown will fulfil a dream on Saturday 13 March when she skydives from RAF Weston near Bicester for charity.
Helen who is the CEO of Deafax and a University of Reading alumna wants to raise about £10,000 towards Deafax's 25thAnniversary Appeal which is being celebrated this year. Deafax uses technology to improve literacy and life skills for deaf people, with the aim of reducing the feeling of isolation.
Helen, who was one of the "Young Achievers of the Year" in 1997, was inspired by her Chair of Trustees, Jenny Searle who is a wheelchair user and who last year skydived for the Leonard Cheshire Disability Foundation. She was also encouraged and challenged by her husband, Ken Carter who was a former Royal Marine Commando as well as the Founder of Deafax.
The Abbey Charitable Trust has recently donated nearly £20,000 to Deafax. The funding will help develop a training package which will cover a range of financial issues enabling users to become more astute in making their financial decisions. It is based on the previously successful DVD called ‘Money Matters' which was also funded by the Abbey Charitable Trust.
Sharon Phelps, Manager at Abbey Woodley Branch said: "Deafax has a proven track record in breaking down barriers and improving the lives of hearing impaired and deaf people. The new training package is relevant and timely and we hope it will make a real difference in understanding the ‘credit crunch' and the effects it may have on day to day living."
