ÔÇÿIt is good to have these young people make themselves part of our neighbourhood. Their positive attitude bodes well and we extend our thanks to them.' Brian Morley, local resident and Secretary, Redlands GLOBE (Go Local On a Better Environment)

University of Reading students joined forces with local residents on Saturday 13 March for the big street clean up, part of the recent Reading-wide RESCUE Day.

The students joined members of the Redlands GLOBE (Go Local On A Better Environment) to clean streets and paint over graffiti on telecom cabinets and a wall.

The University's Community Relations Manager, Ann Westgarth said; ‘It was great to see students joining local residents with the clean-up. In just a couple of hours on Saturday morning they collected a mountain of rubbish and litter. Later, two students did a really good job painting over a large area of graffiti on a wall, making a huge improvement to what was an eye-sore. Well done to everyone who took part, everywhere looks so much better as a result.'

Local resident and member of GLOBE, Brian Morley said; ‘It is good to have these young people makes themselves part of our neighbourhood. Their positive attitude bodes well and we extend our thanks to them.'

As a major and well established institution, the University has a huge impact on the local community. It brings economic, educational, cultural, leisure and social benefits to the area and every year many students engage positively with the community by volunteering for a wide range of organisations and charities.

Community Relations Manager, Ann Westgarth's main role is to be the University's main point of contact for the community. She identifies and implements many actions to enhance community engagement.
