A find from Silchester
'In the last three seasons at Silchester we have made several exciting discoveries, including the first evidence of a gridded, Iron Age town in Britain.'
Continuing excavations at the Iron Age and Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum in Silchester, Hampshire have uncovered some exciting new evidence which gives us a more in depth idea of the character of the town. On Tuesday 27 April, Professor Mike Fulford will reveal these findings when he presents ‘Facing up to Rome: Discoveries at Calleva', the final talk in the University of Reading's fascinating 2009/2010 Public Lecture Series.
The University of Reading's Department of Archaeology has been excavating and researching a central area of Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester) since 1997. In his lecture Professor Fulford, from the University's Department of Archaeology and Director of the Silchester Field School, will explain how new evidence demonstrates the changing character of the settlement before and during the first generations of the Roman occupation of southern Britain.
Professor Fulford said: "In the last three seasons at Silchester we have made several exciting discoveries, including the first evidence of a gridded, Iron Age town in Britain, possible early Roman military occupation, and evidence of later, widespread burning and destruction, suggesting the site could have been destroyed at the hands of the celebrated Boudicca.
"My lecture will explore the nature of the changes that appear to have taken place within the settlement, and how they affected relations between the indigenous inhabitants and the new Roman regime."

This free lecture is open to everyone and no ticket is required. It will take place on Tuesday 27 April at 8.00pm in the Palmer lecture theatre on the University of Reading's Whiteknights Campus.
