Universities Week 2010: What's the big idea?
Friday, 11 June 2010
'We are extremely proud of the value the University of Reading adds to our region's culture and economy.'
Universities are so much more than the teaching institutions for which they are often only recognised. Universities Week brings together all of the country's higher education achievements under one single banner, to highlight what else our universities have to offer on a local and national level.
Higher education institutions generate £59 billion for the UK economy annually, including £32.4 billion generated in other sectors through knock-on effects, making them larger than either the pharmaceutical or advertising industries.
Of our own University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gordon Marshall said; "We are extremely proud of the value the University of Reading adds to our region's culture and economy. Not only do our staff and students generate world-leading research in areas such as climate science, nutrition, heart disease and sustainable buildings, but we also assist hundreds of businesses in the area to deliver solutions, and train over 3000 new members of the workforce every year."
