Students name their top tutors - Teaching Awards 2010

Dr Mundeep Gill ÔÇô Faculty of Science nominee

Each year the University makes awards to staff for outstanding contributions to teaching and learning support, which are based entirely on nominations received from students. Awards go to one nominee from each Faculty, and one nominee from the Directorates. Nominees will be presented with their awards at the graduation ceremonies next week.

The winners for 2010 are:

Faculty of Arts and Humanities

Dr Karín Lesnik-Oberstein

Her students said: "I really feel that Karín's course has furthered my academic achievements in a way which I never thought I was capable of before. I am very grateful to her and her support."

"Karín is a dedicated and hugely knowledgeable teacher who manages to empower students, both in the classroom and in their own independent work."

Faculty of Life Sciences

Dr Matthew Almond

His students said: "He is one of the reasons that I am still here, as his lectures have inspired me to challenge myself and to look deeper into my subject."

"He is always available to provide help and support, whether it be with his lecture material, or indeed other lecturers' material, as well as non-course related things."

Faculty of Science

Dr Mundeep Gill

Her students said: ‘She is always willing to help you and to explain things to you until you have a complete understanding of the subject.'

‘I feel Mundeep has gone above and beyond with her duties and she has most certainly helped me through this year.'

Faculty of Social Sciences

Dr Jeremy Lester

His students said: ‘So far in my honours degree, I have not yet encountered such an enthusiastic teacher.'

‘Perhaps his greatest strength as a lecturer and tutor is his ability to make students think outside the box - to make us question concepts which we take for granted.'

Dr Maria Gee

Her students said: "If you work hard in her class, she will work even harder to ensure you do well."

"She is the first stop for course and university-wide questions due to her great advice and caring mentality."
