Languages are thriving at Reading
Wednesday, 22 September 2010
The University's Institution Wide Language Programme (IWLP)provides foreign language tuition for all members of the University (staff and students) in all disciplines who wish to improve their language skills for academic or other purposes.
The aim of the programme is to develop the ability to communicate effectively in the target language, with particular emphasis on practical language skills, so class work involves active use of the language.
Increasing numbers of students at IWLP in Reading are taking languages as an optional credit module, or as non-credits to brush up existing language skills, travel abroad, add value to their CV or just for the fun of learning something new.
The figures speak for themselves. Since 2004, IWLP's enrolment figures have increased by 25% (from 543 in 2004/05 to 727 in 2009/10), with an 11% increase in the past year and an outstanding 19% between 2007/08 and 2008/09.
Facts and figures are only part of the story. Here are some examples of what our students say:
"I signed up for the Institution-Wide Language Programme because I felt that my German had become a little rusty. I have no doubt that the programme helped me greatly in advancing my language skills.
The variety of learning styles kept things interesting: each class was quite different from the last, so there were always surprises! Presentation work helped me to gain confidence and communication skills (I'd never done a presentation in a foreign language before); group exercises were sociable and fun as the other students in the class were quite like-minded and friendly; and even the grammar exercises weren't too bad either!". (S.J., German 4)
"I chose Reading University partly because of IWLP and the opportunity to do the second language." (T.T., Spanish 3, 4 & 5)
"As a graduate I can look back on the IWLP course as an essential part of my professional development. I love languages because they have opened up a different world to me and have given me access to information, research and cultural experiences outside the English-speaking realm. Since my own artwork is political this has been a useful skill to have. Having gained a first in my Degree, I intend to continue my studies in France for a year or two and then become a teacher." (M.A., French 2 & 3)
IWLP language courses are open to all members of the University community. Registration for 2010-11 will start on Wednesday 6 October 2010 from 1pm in the HumSS Ground Foyer. For further details contact iwlp@reading.ac.uk.
