Student fee increases - key answers

A number of questions and answers have been prepared to help explain the proposed student fee increases for entry in the academic year 2012/13.
This may be of particular use for those members of staff who receive enquiries from students and prospective students.

The following bullet points give a general overview:
- The Government has announced a new fee level of between £6,000 and £9,000 per annum
- The University of Reading is still to determine its fee levels
- No upfront fees would need to be paid. It is the graduate not the student who would pay the fees
- Graduates would only start to pay back fees when their salary rose above £21,000 per annum
- Loans for tuition fees will, from 2012, incur a real rate of interest
- The Government is introducing a National Scholarship Programme to help ‘bright students from poor backgrounds' access higher education. Details of the programme are still to be confirmed
