'significant energy savings can be made with staff cooperation.' Nigel Hodgson, Energy Manager

Last week saw the end of another successful Green Week. It was fantastic to see so many people turn up at the events including a litter pick accompanied by a samba band, a suppliers' exhibition to highlight green practice and a bicycle bonanza with Dr Bike sessions and cycling proficiency.

Well done to those who braved the environmental walk on Thursday - they were very soggy when they returned to their desks due to the torrential downpour that struck at lunchtime!

Another highlight of the week was the Awards Ceremony that marked the end of proceedings. This saw the participants in the Green Impact Award formally receive recognition for their efforts. To find out which building performed best, please see the chart below.

In addition to the internal success of many of our departments, the University also received the Office Depot prize for Innovation as part of the Degrees Cooler Programme.

This award recognised the groundbreaking approach that has been taken to improve environmental awareness and reduce the carbon footprint of staff in the Carrington Building.

Carol Prior, Help Desk Team Manager and Debbie Doyle, PA to the Director of Student Services took the lead on the project that reduced energy consumption in the Carrington Building by 25% in targeted areas and out of hours' usage by a massive 40%!

Energy Manager, Nigel Hodgson said; "We are delighted that The Carrington Building beat many other universities to this award. Carol and Debbie have proved that significant energy savings can be made with staff cooperation. The University is now considering rolling out this approach across campus."
