International award for Dr Annalisa Marzano

Dr Annalisa Marzano of the Classics Department has been awarded an Honourable Mention and a silver medal at an award ceremony in Rome, in the Consiglio Nazionale delle, Ricerche.

The Premio Romanistico Internazionale Gérard Boulvert, which is intended to recognise the work of younger scholars of all nationalities in topics related to Roman law, is held every three years under the auspices of the President of the Italian Republic and supported by the Supreme Court of Italy, the Universities of La Sapienza (Rome) and Federico II (Naples), the Italian National Research Council (CNR), and various foundations.

Dr Marzano's book Roman Villas in Central Italy: A Social and Economic History (2007) was recognized for its "notable scientific quality". Describing it as "a work of great relevance for the study of the villa which ... presents a very coherent and convincing reconstruction", the twelve jurors unanimously decided to acknowledge Dr Marzano's research with the Honourable Mention and an engraved silver medal. Dr Marzano is also spending the current academic year as a Visiting Research Scholar at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University.

This year the jury considered 47 monographs published between 2007 and 2009; the jury includes many distinguished international scholars, such as Professors Luigi Labruna (Federico II, Naples), Jean Andreau (EHESS-Paris), Luigi Capogrossi Colognesi (La Sapienza, Rome), Rolf Knütel (Universität Bonn), and Pascal Pichonaz (Université de Fribourg), as well as jurists such as Alan Rodger (Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom).
