'David, Elizabeth and Martha-Marie all have extremely high teaching and learning profiles both within and outside the University, and have very strong cases for a National Teaching Fellowship.'
The Higher Education community is preparing to recognise the individual excellence of its most talented teachers with the launch of the 2011 National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS).
This year the University of Reading is pleased to nominate: David Stanbury (Centre of Career Management Skills); Dr Elizabeth Page (School of Chemistry, Food and Pharmacy); and Dr Martha-Marie Kleinhans (Faculty of Social Sciences).
Run by the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the NTFS aims to raise the profile of learning and teaching; recognise and celebrate individuals who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience; and provide a national focus for institutional teaching and learning schemes.
Up to 50 awards of £10,000 each will be made this year to recognise individual excellence, their intention being to support the Fellows' professional development in teaching and learning pedagogy. Eligible higher and further education institutions are invited to nominate up to three individual members of staff who can demonstrate excellence in supporting the student learning experience in higher and further education.
All three Reading nominees have been chosen by the University's NTFS selection panel on the basis of their outstanding contribution to teaching and learning and ongoing commitment to developing and sharing best practice.
Last year, both David and Elizabeth were recognised by the University as ‘ones to watch' for their exceptional achievements in the areas of student learning and the development of teaching and learning beyond their School/department, and University Teaching Fellow Martha-Marie has twice been shortlisted for the national ‘Law Teacher of the Year' by her subject centre.
Julia Phelps, Director of the Centre for the Development of Teaching and Learning (CDoTL), said: "Reading has been very successful in the National Teaching Fellowship in recent years. It's fantastic that we have such a strong pool of staff to select our nominees from. David, Elizabeth and Martha-Marie all have extremely high teaching and learning profiles both within and outside the University, and have very strong cases for a National Teaching Fellowship."
The winners of the 2011 NTFS will be decided by Thursday 7 July 2011, and results published by the HEA on 28 July 2011. For further information about the scheme visit the HEA website.
