The University has clubs dedicated to both these sports open to all members of staff.
University golf society
Reading University's Staff Golf Society (RUSGS) hold five society meetings throughout the year, playing on a variety of courses in the area. Two match play knock-out competitions are also keenly played out by its members.
This equates to five competitive trophies matches each year. There are also numerous prizes awarded after each society meeting.
Twice, each year (and for the last 13 years), RUSGS does battle with the University of Surrey to establish themselves as the four-ball champions. These games alternate between Surrey and Berkshire and the prize is a Cup, a cup with no name!
Over the years the trophy has been the object of intense rivalry between the two Universities and a glance at the engraved plaque makes for sorry reading. Until now, the word ‘Reading' hasn't appeared twice in succession, but 2010 has seen RUSGS beat their rivals home and away in the same season.
Dr Graham Holloway, from the School of Biological Sciences, said: "Smarting from their humiliation, during the 2010 rout, Surrey will more than likely be seeking to wrench the trophy from our grasp with more gusto than ever before. Given this, RUSGS are looking for new members to further raise our own high standards of play. Our aim is to ensure the 2011 season is as triumphant as 2010."

Members of the University of Reading Bowling Club have recently returned from an annual visit to Hayling Island, for example, where they took part in an indoor bowling weekend. One Reading team managed to reach the semi finals of this competition.
The Club has a weekend to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight fixed for March this year and a summer weekend in Bournemouth to look forward to.
Any member of staff interested in joining the club, regardless of ability, please contact Mike Lewis. m.j.lewis@reading.ac.uk
