After July 2011, Blackboard will have a new look and feel. Fully supported by its developers, the software's latest release Blackboard Learn 9.1, boasts an up to date web 2.0 interface, better functionality, and a host of brand new features that encourage student engagement, support efficiency and allow for easier integration of web resources.
The e-Learning team in the Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning (CDoTL) is working with Schools and Faculties to ensure a smooth transition and prepare staff for the changes.
New BB v.9 upgrade tab goes live
Staff logging in to Blackboard this week will be taken straight to the new ‘Blackboard v. 9 Upgrade' tab. This is a central place for information about the upgrade, with links to the Sandbox test server, where staff can see how their courses will appear and function in the new version, find information about demonstration/training sessions, and pick up tips on how to get the most out of Blackboard for teaching and learning. The tab will remain available after that time and return as the landing page in regular intervals with updates on the upgrade project.
Find out what's new in Blackboard 9.1
To find out what's new in Blackboard 9.1, staff can self-enrol in 'What's new in Blackboard 9.1', an online course which compares and explains the main differences staff should be aware of following the upgrade, or attend a demo session. The next demo session will take place on 21 March, 13.00-14.00, in Sail 108. To sign up for this session, email cstd@reading.ac.uk. To book a demo session for your School or department, contact n.guggi@reading.ac.uk.
Get involved
Staff are encouraged to log on to the Sandbox test server at https://bbv9.reading.ac.uk/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp (University username and password required) to experience first-hand how their existing courses will appear and function in Blackboard 9.1. Changes made here will not affect their courses on the live server. Please note that any new content uploaded may be lost during the changeover, and the Sandbox is only available on campus.
Staff Pilot programme
Several schools and departments have already joined a Staff Pilot programme which allows staff to access to specially designed areas with tasks and activities in Blackboard 9.1 to familiarise staff with the new tools and features on offer. Email n.guggi@reading.ac.uk to sign up.
Get ready
Hands-on training sessions are that cover all you need to know to access and develop your course in Blackboard 9.1 are on offer and available for booking now. Sessions run in June and July. For individual or School bookings, email cstd@reading.ac.uk.
