Hopkins Building at night

This is real progress towards our target of 35% reduction in carbon emissions by 2015/16 and shows what can be done when we all work together.

Earth hour coincided well with the end of term, it was a good opportunity to make sure as much equipment as possible was turned off before the Easter vacation. During that weekend alone, we saved over £3,500 on electricity and 230 tCO2e compared to the average weekend in 2011.  

However there is still room for improvement! During Earth Hour, 20:30 - 21:30, Security kindly toured the Whiteknights campus noting buildings with their lights on.......This is the list!

  • HumSS Tower - Various Floors
  • Henley Business School - All floors
  • AMS Micro - Ground and 1st floor
  • Carrington Building - Ground floor
  • Whiteknights House, 2nd and 3rd floors
  • Physics - Top floor
  • Engineering - Top floor
  • Chemistry - All floors
  • Food Biosciences - 2nd and 3rd floor
  • Hopkins Building - 1st floor
  • Phillip Lyle - 1st floor
  • Cybernetics - Ground floor
  • Fine Art
  • Harry Pitt - Ground floor
  • Psychology -3rd Floor

To help those buildings and departments that find it hard to remember to Shut Down, The Environment, Energy and Sustainability Team are encouraging each office to produce a Shut Down Guide that provides a quick and easy reference point for people to check which equipment can be switched off at the end of the day/week. http://www.reading.ac.uk/nmsruntime/saveasdialog.aspx?lID=60444&sID=172918

So please remember to switch off (where appropriate, and at the wall if possible):

  • Computers
  • Radios
  • Televisions/LCD screens in foyers etc.
  • Heaters
  • Photocopiers
  • Fridges (if empty)
  • Other electrical equipment that does not need to be on overnight or at the weekend
  • And finally, as you leave your office or area, lights!
