'This is an opportunity for all of us in the new faculty to create something very special.ÔÇÖ
The faculties of Arts and Humanities and Social Science will merge to create one faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science from 1 August 2011.
The recommendation for the merger stems from the Reshaping Project and has been agreed by both Faculty Management Boards. It is designed to facilitate greater cross-disciplinary working, especially in research, as well as providing more opportunity to share best practise in teaching, such as sharing expertise regarding student work placements, and facilitating greater communication regarding joint programmes.
The creation of what will be the largest faculty at the University mirrors recent changes to create larger research units through the merger of departments in the two faculties and the creation of new School structures. The new faculty will have six schools (three from each faculty), 245 academic staff and over 4700 students.
The new Dean of the joint faculty, with effect from 1 August 2011, will be Professor Hugo Tucker, currently Head of the School of Literature and Languages. He will also be Faculty Director of Research. There will remain two Faculty Directors of Teaching and Learning, Dr Paddy Woodman and Dr Martha-Marie Kleinhans and Professor Christopher Duggan will return to the role as Head of School of Literature and Languages.
"Becoming Dean of a new faculty is a great privilege," said Professor Tucker. "These are difficult times in Higher Education, but this is an opportunity for all of us in the new faculty to create something very special."
