'Our ranking reaffirms the high regard in which our students hold the quality of teaching and research at the University across a broad range of subjects'
The University of Reading has been ranked 32nd in the 2012 Guardian University Guide (published 17 May 2011), 13 places higher than last year. The league table is published annually as a guide to all UK universities ranked according to teaching excellence.
Reading is delighted to be ranked number one in the country for our departments of Agriculture and Food in the league table. The University is unique in having individual research projects that cover the whole food chain, from farm to fork. The University's Centre for Food Security joins together areas of research excellence to tackle issues such as changes in climate and land use, over-nutrition in western societies, changes of nutrition in developing countries and increased awareness of the environmental consequences of food production.
The University's Institute of Education was ranked in the top three education institutions in the country, while Art and Design at Reading leapt from 47th place to 6th place, ahead of the Glasgow School of Art and Goldsmiths and Law at Reading rose 19 places to rank 17th ahead of Bristol and Exeter.
Reading was also in the top ten for Earth and Marine Sciences (4) - our first appearance in this subject, Building and Town /Country Planning (8) and Archaeology (10).
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gordon Marshall said: "We are delighted to have moved up in the Guardian league table, as we constantly strive to improve. Our ranking reaffirms the high regard in which our students hold the quality of teaching and research at the University across a broad range of subjects."
In addition to the news on the Guardian league table, the latest employability data for Reading's 2010 graduates shows its best result for a decade. The percentage of Reading 2010 graduates who reported they were in graduate level work and/or study has risen by 3.3% from 2009 to almost 70%. Those reporting being unemployed has fallen to 6.6% from 8.5%. All of these factors make Reading a very attractive choice for students.
