This September, for the third consecutive year, the University will be showcasing some of our internationally recognised departments in an interactive exhibit at the Royal Berkshire Show 2011. The organisers at Newbury and District Agricultural Society would like to invite staff to the Show with a special discounted ticket rate of £12 per ticket (please see ‘How to obtain your University discount' below).
NB. The deadline for purchasing discounted tickets has now been extended to midnight on 5 September - buy yours now!
The Show, which is taking place on the weekend of the 17 and 18 September, is a celebration of agriculture and rural living in our county and the University is, once again, pleased to feature an exhibition to showcase our work in these areas. Our display this year will highlight the history of British bread making, from crop to loaf, and will include a hands-on opportunity to explore the processes involved.
In addition, the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) will be displaying their Archers exhibition, commemorating 60 years of the popular BBC Radio 4 programme. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity for Archers' listeners to explore how the changing world of agriculture has been reflected throughout the programme's six decades. Members of The Archers team, along with the curators of the exhibition, will visit the show over the weekend to chat with fans and answer their questions.
Alongside the University's exhibitions, there are a whole host of other activities and displays to keep visitors entertained, including: livestock competitions, a daredevil stunt rider performance on horseback, over 600 shops and stalls, an old fashioned funfair and reptile tent, and the final of the British Showjumping's International Stairway Competition.
Show Chairman, Alan Pooles, said: "The Royal County of Berkshire Show really is Berkshire's Best Weekend. We've seen the Show grow over the years to an event which offers something that every member of the family can enjoy. It brings the countryside to the town and by doing so embraces the whole of Berkshire".
