Reading academics shortlisted for Times Higher Education awards

Two of Reading's leading academics, Professor Mark Pagel and Dr James Ferryman have been shortlisted for the prestigious Times Higher Education Awards 2011.
"Our shortlist for the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards showcases the sector's standouts. Now in their 7th year, the Times Higher Education Awards are a highlight of the academic calendar and a glittering celebration of the best of the sector," Ann Mroz, Editor, Times Higher Education.
Professor Mark Pagel, School of Biological Sciences has been shortlisted in the category ‘Research Project of the Year' for his work on the evolution of languages. Earlier this year, professor Pagel was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, joining the likes of Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking and Sir Magdi Yacoub.
Dr James Ferryman, Senior Lecturer in the School of Systems Engineering has been shortlisted in the category ‘Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology' - an award that recognizes an initiative that has demonstrated an innovative, strategic and potentially far-reaching use of Information and Communications Technology. Dr Ferryman's work, the 'spy in the cabin' system, could possibly help prevent terrorist attacks on aircraft.
The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London on Thursday 24 November.
