Retirement - you decide when
Monday, 26 September 2011
from 1 October, there will no longer be a formal date on which you will have to retire
1 October 2011 sees the official removal of the Default Retirement Age. This means that there is no longer a formal date on which the University will require you to retire. It will now be down to you to plan and decide on an appropriate date for retirement.
Although the University has allowed staff to request to work beyond their retirement date for a number of years, the change in legislation will alter how we will manage retirement in the future.
The removal of the Default Retirement Age will provide greater opportunity for the University to continue employing staff with the skills, experience and expertise that contributes to our ongoing success.
There will be some practical changes in how retirement is managed and the HR website has been updated with some useful information http://www.reading.ac.uk/internal/humanresources/policiesandprocedures/humres-retirement.aspx
If you are thinking about retirement, then you may want to consider attending the ‘Planning ahead for retirement' course that is available through CSTD. This provides a suite of useful information to help you plan effectively for your retirement.
Alternatively, you may be a manager who is considering the implications of the removal of the Default Retirement Age. A new 1 hour training session has been developed for this, the first of which is on the 30th September 2011 at 2pm.
Details of all courses can be found through Employee Self Service http://www.reading.ac.uk/internal/humanresources/humres-selfservice.aspx or on the CSTD WebPages http://www.reading.ac.uk/internal/CSTD/cstd-home.aspx
