'The University is ranked 164th in the influential world top 200 rankings'
The University of Reading is ranked among the top 200 research-led global universities, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2011, published today (6 October 2011). The University is ranked 164th in the influential top 200 rankings, a rise of 46 places on 2010.
The University has re-entered the top 200, after falling just outside last year for the first time, and has increased its ranking by a tremendous 46 places. According to the THE, "The top 200 represents approximately the top 1% of Higher Education institutions in the world, so this placing represents an outstanding achievement."
A message from Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tony Downes:
"Colleagues, while many of us have misgivings about the validity of league tables and their methodologies, we cannot ignore the importance placed on them by prospective students, and in particular, those students who know little of us by dint of living in other countries. For us to be a fixture in the world top 200 provides a stamp of credibility and a shop window for us to build on our work internationally; to facilitate international partnerships, enhance the worldwide impact of our research and increase the number and diversity of our students, to name but three positive outcomes.
"While changes in rankings methodologies and data collection all impact on rankings, it is the ongoing work of all our staff that deliver a highly valued student experience, research recognized as world leading and real benefits to societies and economies worldwide. I would like to thank you for all your hard work and while league table placings may go up and down, there is a remarkable consistency about the quality of the work that is undertaken at this university."
The rankings are based on 13 performance indicators, including a university's academic reputation for excellence in teaching and research, as well as measures of the quality of the learning environment, the influence, reputation and volume of research papers published, industry income and international outlook.
