Cancer to corruption and happiness to hurricanes - Public Lecture Series 2011-12
Thursday, 13 October 2011
'We are always delighted at the turnout for our public lectures and we hope that the fantastic programme for the forthcoming series will be just as popular.'
Subjects ranging from cancer to corruption and happiness to hurricanes are just some of the fascinating topics to be showcased in the forthcoming 2011-2012 Public Lecture Series.
The popular series, which sees University of Reading experts share their knowledge with the public in a series of free evening lectures, begins on Wednesday 19 October.
In the first lecture, Dr Marina Della Giusta, from the School of Politics, Economics and International Relations, will explore the economics of happiness. She said: "Governments across the world say our happiness is important and should be a policy goal in its own right. In my lecture I will be discussing what happiness actually is and how it can be measured. Economists and policy makers are interested in it but should they be?"
The talks are given by researchers eminent in their field and in a manner that is easily understood by all. They offer a unique opportunity to learn about the cutting-edge research, teaching and people that make the University a world-class institute.
Professor Steve Mithen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement, said: "Sharing our research with the community is one of the key aims of the University. We are always delighted at the turnout for our public lectures and we hope that the fantastic programme for the forthcoming series will be just as popular."
The Public Seminar series, introduced in 2010, also begins this month and provides members of the public with a more intimate and focussed opportunity to hear about the University's cutting edge research. Academics will explore their niche subject in more detail than is often presented on a public platform and ample time is given for discussion and Q&A.
All of the University Public Lectures are on Wednesdays and start at 8pm. They will be held in the Palmer Building on the University's Whiteknights campus. Lectures are free to attend and no ticket is required. Please visit the Public Lecture Series website for more details or contact the Events team on 0118 378 4313 or email events@reading.ac.uk.
