'JH Benyon is remembered for his sense of humour and hearty laugh, so we hope that these characteristics will live on in the new reception building.'
Reading Student Village has been renamed Benyon Hall, in honour of the University's first Chancellor James Herbert Benyon, at a special ceremony this week.
JH Benyon was formerly Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire and former Chair of Berkshire County Council, and served as the University's Chancellor from 1926-1935. Members of the Benyon family were present at the opening, along with Reading Mayor, Deborah Edwards, Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Tony Downes, and staff and students from Benyon Hall.
Mary Riall, daughter of Sir William and Lady Benyon, said that they are touched by the University's decision to name the Hall after a member of their family: "JH Benyon is remembered for his sense of humour and hearty laugh, so we hope that these characteristics will live on in the new reception building. I'm sure that the new building will enhance the learning of students in years to come."
UPP and construction partner Mansell have developed a new student reception and Junior Common Room, which will provide students with their own communal space onsite. These areas have been built with sustainability in mind.
Professor Tony Downes said: "Prospective students, more than ever, are looking to get the best quality student experience, and excellent accommodation is right at the top of that wish list. We are delighted that UPP has invested significantly in the accommodation they provide for Reading students and that its new name reflects our earliest days as a University."
