The Raymond Wilson Poetry Competition 2011

Dr Michael Lockwood and Rebecca Atherton

Dr Michael Lockwood presents Rebecca Atherton with her prize

The 2011 Raymond Wilson competition to write a poem for children has been won by Rebecca Atherton, (pictured receiving her cheque for £200 from Dr Michael Lockwood, the competition organiser). At the time of entry Rebecca was a PGCE Secondary student in the Institute of Education. Her winning poem:

Bedtime Poem

When the sun says goodnight,

And the silky darkness replaces light,

When the moon has raised her smiling head

Close your eyes, it's time for bed.

You're in your room, cosy and warm

Tucked in lovingly 'til the dawn.

The bed is soft, the pillow deep.

Close your eyes, it's time to sleep.

Your eyes are heavy, you're drifting away,

To a land where unicorns dance and play.

The stars are beginning to sparkle and gleam

Close your eyes, it's time to dream.

Highly commended poems were ‘Raindrops' by Jane Owl and ‘Sir Pete's Adventure' by Tasha Dawson. The judges would like to thank everyone who entered the 2011 competition. Details of the 2012 competition will appear on the University website in the New Year.
