University Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning 2012 nominations open

Monday, 16 January 2012

Teaching award winners 2011

The Institute of Education team who won an award in 2011

Staff are invited to nominate their colleagues for these awards to recognise valuable work undertaken to enhance teaching and learning throughout the University

Run by the Centre for the Development of Teaching and Learning (CDoTL), the aim of the newly titled University Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning is to recognise and reward individuals and teams of staff who have made significant, ongoing contributions to teaching and learning, either through direct interactions with students, their support of staff within the School/section or their contributions to a Faculty, Directorate or University initiative.

These awards replace the Faculty and School Awards held in previous years and nominations can be made in two categories:

Academic/teaching staff

Staff who have an academic/teaching role. Nominations for all staff who have a teaching role including 'new' lecturers, teaching fellows and experienced staff are encouraged.

Teaching and learning support staff

Staff who support teaching and learning in its various guises across the University. This category includes, for example, technical support staff, secretarial staff who provide direct support to teaching staff and/or students, postgraduate demonstrators, programme directors, teaching assistants, admissions tutors, Library, Student Services and ITS staff, etc.

Emma Vickers from the School of Humanities and the recipient of an Award in 2011 said: "I was delighted to receive a Teaching and Learning award. It provided external confirmation that the time and energy that I continue to dedicate to my students was appreciated and recognised. The award also encouraged me to maintain my standards and work on expanding my techniques."

The University Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning (Team) follow the same principles as the individual award but are aimed at teams involved in both the development of existing teaching practices and/or new teaching initiatives to support student learning.

Jo Elsey from the Institute of Education and member of one of the Teams to receive an award in 2011 said: "I was extremely pleased that the excellent work of the Early Years Team was celebrated through the Teaching and Learning Award and I know all team members appreciated that their outstanding commitment to the Foundation Degree in Children's Development and Learning, BA in Children's Development and Learning and Early Years Professional Status programmes had been valued and recognised."

Staff are invited to nominate their colleagues for these awards to recognise valuable work undertaken to enhance teaching and learning throughout the University.

The awards are open to all employees of the University with an academic, teaching or learning support role, from all departments and directorates.

Further information about the awards, including full criteria and details of how to apply can be found on the CDoTL website >>>

The submission deadline is Friday 24 February 2012.
