University response to the Woolf Report
Friday, 24 February 2012
Following the recent report by Lord Woolf on relations between the London School of Economics and Libya, the University of Reading has reviewed its own policies with regard to philanthropic funding and the way in which PhD students are admitted.
The review has concluded that our systems currently work well but that there is a clear need to remain vigilant to protect the integrity and reputation of the University and to ensure we accurately record donations and take professional advice at the earliest opportunity.
Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Bell said: "I would strongly encourage you to ensure, at the earliest possible moment, that the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) are made aware of any approaches that you make or receive for possible philanthropic funding. Likewise, it is also important to ensure that any donations that are received are reported to DARO so that these can be recorded properly."
Staff in any doubt as to whether funds should be classified as philanthropic, or whether they fall under the headings of sponsorship or contract research should contact Andy Wood, Director of DARO, on 0118 378 8255.
