'If you know of any students who give up their spare time on their own initiative, by providing support to others or by making a contribution to community life, then please nominate them for an award.' Ann Westgarth, Community Relations Manager

Each year the University's Student Community Awards recognise the brilliant efforts of students who give up their spare time to help others. These unsung heroes help with local youth groups, organise fundraising activities for charities or carry out acts of kindness and generosity just because they see a need and want to help.

Nominations are sought from students, University staff, local residents, or organisations students are involved in, and should normally be made without the student(s) knowledge.

Students Neil Cummins, Jessica Scott and Stacey Telford were joint winners of the award in 2011 for their volunteer work at the Ridgeline Trust's Therapeutic Garden in Whiteknights Road which benefits mentally and physically disabled members of the community. The winning students proved exceptionally loyal, regularly giving up their own time to volunteer for this important local project.

Students Siobhan Burke and Susanne Durrant were joint winners of the Award in 2010. Siobhan single-handedly co-ordinated the University's Students' Union entry into the Reading Half Marathon which raised over £5,000 for local charities, and Susanne took on the huge task of distributing over 3,000 Christmas gifts to underprivileged children, donated by local business and members of the public.

Ann Westgarth, the University's Community Relations Manager and organiser of the awards, said: "If you know of any students who give up their spare time on their own initiative, by providing support to others or by making a contribution to community life, then please nominate them for an award. We are keen to celebrate students who do great work in the community, who may otherwise go unrecognised."

The closing date for nominations is March 25 2012.

The Award Committee, made up of representatives from Reading University Students' Union, local residents, the Chaplaincy and the University will announce the winner of the award at a special ceremony in June 2012.

The award has been funded by donations made to the Annual Fund by Reading Alumni. The prize(s) of up to £250 may be awarded to individual students, specific groups of students or student households.
