National Science & Engineering Week
Wednesday, 14 March 2012
National Science & Engineering Week shines the spotlight each March on how science, technology, engineering and maths relate to our everyday lives and helps to inspire the next generation of scientists with fun and participative activities.
The University has already been involved in several events, but there are more to come that are open to the public:
Thursday 15 March two of our researchers will be showing some of the exciting research happening at the University around the theme of ‘Our World in Motion'. These regular seminars celebrate research at Reading and are named in memory of Peter Berners Fellgett, Emeritus Professor of Cybernetics.
Lesley Allison, from the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, will discuss ocean circulation and its role in climate, and Murray Evans, from the School of Systems Engineering , will talk about how motion is exploited in computer vision, for example robot navigation and 3D reconstruction. It takes place in Palmer Building, Room 109 at 7.00pm.
Saturday 17 March 'Meet Mother Nature' at the Museum of English Rural Life. Discover the science of nature, find out about biodiversity and meet local conservation groups. There will be lots of hands-on activities. Free to attend.
Sunday 18 March there will be a science pub quiz in the Three Guineas Pub, Station side, Reading. Open to all, £1 entry donation, proceeds go to charity. Test your science knowledge in a relaxed and fun environment and win prizes. This event starts at 7.30pm.
