University launches new International Summer School
Friday, 16 March 2012
The University is delighted to announce the launch of the University of Reading International Summer School, co-ordinated through the International Study and Language Centre (ISLC).
As part of the Internationalisation strategy, from 2012 a range of short courses will be offered during July and early August. The International Summer School's main aim is to attract participants from around the world who would like a ‘taster' of a world-class UK university. The new programme brings together two existing short courses and sees the launch of eight new ones, including four different Economics courses.
The launch of these courses provides participants with an exciting opportunity to explore what the University of Reading has to offer in terms of expertise and facilities, and at the same time develop skills and knowledge that will help them progress with Undergraduate or Postgraduate study.
The ISLC will play a co-ordinating role in the International Summer School, as well as offering a range of European language sessions to summer school participants as part of the teaching programme. The courses offered will include:
Art Nomad - a course enabling participants to develop their art portfolio towards undergraduate applications.
Corporate Social Responsibility - a course covering the main issues of the rapidly developing subject of multinational corporations' good citizenship.
Crises, Bubbles and Macroeconomic Policies - taking participants through a history of major financial crises up to the present day.
Economics of Climate Change - looking at the interaction between the environment and the economy.
Energy Economics - designed for mid-career professionals in the oil and gas industry who wish to acquire a basic knowledge of the subject.
Law and English - covering Company Law, EU Law, International Law and Common Law as well as English for legal and academic purposes.
European Culture and History - looking into topics from Modern Britain to Dante to German Linguistics.
Spaces of Production and Performance - allowing participants to develop practical and research skills beneficial for postgraduate study in film, theatre or television studies.
The existing Silchester Archaeology Field School within Archaeology and the Postgraduate Latin course within Classics will also be promoted under the new International Summer School banner.
The courses are open to all who have a suitable interest in the relevant subject, including people from UK, who would like to develop their skills and knowledge with an international perspective.
International Summer School Director Bruce Howell says; "Short academic summer courses in universities are becoming more popular throughout Europe. Reading has great potential in running such courses, which will attract people from all over the world who will then spread the word about Reading's excellent staff, knowledge, skills, facilities and location."
