The University regrets to announce the death of Dr Patrick Hughes:
Dr Patrick Hughes was born into a minority Catholic family in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He began work as a Primary teacher in Belfast in a school once described as the roughest in Ireland and then trained as an Educational Psychologist. He worked in Child Guidance Clinics in Leicestershire and Hertfordshire.
Patrick moved into training educational psychologists at the University of Swansea before beginning his career at the University of Reading as Lecturer in Educational Psychology in the then School of Education on 1 January 1967.
He was in charge of the Guidance & Counselling Unit at the School of Education 20/22 London Road. He developed the one year training course for Careers Guidance for LEA staff and one year's advance diploma for teachers and other professionals which later became part of the MA Ed.
Patrick was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1973. The Guidance & Counselling Unit closed with the merger with Bulmershe College which also coincided with Patrick's retirement in 1988.
In addition to his academic work, he was resident warden at St Patrick's Hall for approximately eight years. He continued his membership after he left and enjoyed many SCR dinners there.
After he retired, he continued his involvement with the University by enrolling to study for a BA in Music in the Department of Music. He was an accomplished pianist and organist. Patrick was also a very knowledgeable wine-lover who could always advise friends on wonderful bargains.
Our thoughts are with his wife, Monica, an alumna of the University of Reading and their two children Brendan and Ellen.
A Requiem Mass will be held at St Thomas More Parish Church, London Road, Twyford, RG10 9EL on Friday 13 April at 1.00 pm. This will be followed at 2.30 pm by a Celebration of Patrick's life at Easthampstead Park Crematorium, South Road, Nine Mile Ride, Wokingham, Berkshire RG40 3DW.
Friends, colleagues and former students will be welcome to attend the Requiem Mass and/or the Celebration, which will be followed by coffee and cake at Patrick's favourite tea shop.
