Staff rewarded for teaching and learning excellence

The Centre for the Development of Teaching and Learning (CDoTL) and Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) are pleased to announce that this year 55 members of staff have been recognised for their significant contribution to teaching and learning, through a variety of awardschemes. Congratulations to all!
Professor Gavin Brooks, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning said: "I am delighted that, via these award schemes, the University and RUSU are able to recognise the outstanding contributions that colleagues make to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning across the institution.
"We received a number of very high quality applications this year which helps to demonstrate the excellence in teaching and learning that we have across campus, and the commitment that staff make to providing an excellent student experience. I would like to congratulate all of our 2012 award winners."
Gold Star Awards
Towards the end of each academic year, RUSU invites students to nominate members of staff whom they feel have had a great impact on their learning whilst at University. One member of staff from each faculty was chosen to receive a Gold Star Award, which were presented at a ceremony in early June.

2012 University and Early Career Teaching Fellowship Winners
The University Teaching Fellowship is a prestigious and competitive award conferred on an individual who has demonstrated individual excellence and contributed to the development of teaching and learning at the University. The Fellowship is designed to enable staff to further develop and support enhancements in teaching and learning and this year we are delighted to announce that the following staff have been awarded University Teaching Fellowships:
- Dr Andy Kempe (Institute of Education)
- Dr Jane Setter (Literature and Languages)
- Dr David Carter (Classics)
- Professor Rachel McCrindle (Systems Engineering)
The Early Career Teaching Fellowship follows the same principles as the University Fellowship scheme but is aimed at staff who are at an early stage in their University career. This year we are delighted to announce that the following three members of staff have been awarded an Early Career Teaching Fellowship:
- Dr David Nutt (Chemistry)
- Dr Katrina Bicknell (Pharmacy)
- Dr James Garnett (Institute of Education)
2012 University Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning
This is a competitive scheme which recognises and rewards individuals who have made outstanding, on-going contributions to teaching and learning. This can either be through direct interactions with students, their support of staff within the School/section, or their contributions to a Faculty, Directorate or University initiative. This year the awards panel agreed that five awards of £1,000 should be made to the following members of staff:
Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science - Dr Jacqueline Laws (Literature and Languages), Catherine Foley (Institute of Education)
Faculty of Life Sciences - Dr Alastair Culham (Biological Sciences)
Faculty of Science - Dr Calvin Smith (Mathematical and Physical Sciences)
Directorate of Academic Services and Student Services - Ross Connell (Library)
When judging the nominations for these Awards the panel also identified a number of staff who had clearly made a significant contribution to teaching and learning, which deserved wider recognition. The panel therefore made seven additional awards of £200 each to the following members of staff:

2012 Team Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning
The Awards Panel agreed that the following teams should be presented with an award:
