University Lecturer exhibits his work in Reading Museum
Tuesday, 10 July 2012
Betwixt and Between is an exhibition by John Mitchell, Lecturer in Art & Design Education in the University's Institute of Education.
Betwixt and Between is John's first exhibition in Reading. This is a large scale installation, spreads across four rooms of the Reading Museum and one work, simply called ‘Reception', greets the visitor at the museum's entrance.
All of the works have been conceived of and selected in response to specific exhibits in the museum's displays. The context for the exhibition relates to John's interest in museums and their cultural significance.
Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum was a favourite haunt of his childhood and was instrumental in him becoming an artist. He is an avid collector of ‘things' and it is often from his collection that new works arise.
The works in the exhibition have at their core the found or everyday, object. These objects are the starting point for works in a variety of mediums. The works include sound/kinetic pieces, sculptural tableaux and simple arrangements of objects.
They sit alongside one or more of the museum's exhibits and invite the viewer to engage in response to the artist's play with, and exploration of, notions of memory (Pleasure Beach); time (Beauty Unearthed); nature (Dawn Chorus); culture (Reception); history and religion (New World Order); philosophy (God is in The Detail) and more.
Betwixt and Between - 2nd floor galleries at the Reading Museum and Town Hall, Blagrave Street until Sunday 5 August 2012. Find out more information about the exhibition >>>
