'We're delighted to be able to document the lectures in this way as now people from all over the world can look back at a lasting record of what our expert academics have to say.'
This year's ever popular Public Lecture Series began last week with Professor Steve Mithen's ‘Thirst: Water and Power in the ancient world', but don't worry if you missed it - for the first time, no matter where you are in the world, you can relive the lecture online.
Using ‘Storify', a social media tool, a selection of tweets, slides, photographs and videos have been incorporated to create a permanent record of the lecture that can be viewed online.
Ellie Gotay, organiser of the Public Lectures from the Corporate Relations and Events Office, said: "We're delighted to be able to document the lectures in this way as, for over 40 years each lecture has been enjoyed only by those present in the lecture theatre, but now people from all over the world can look back at a lasting record of what our expert academics have to say."
On Wednesday 17 October Professor Mithen took the audience on a fascinating journey around the ancient world citing important examples of water management, including the first ever flushing toilet, 1,500 fountains in ancient Rome and a 2,000 year old irrigation system in China that can be seen from space, and discussed what we can learn today from the way water has been harnessed throughout history.

In addition to the new online version of the lecture, it is hoped that future lectures will be streamed live over the internet, allowing people to ask questions via Twitter using the hash tag #UoRLectures, and via text message. Watch this space for details!
