'I am pleased to announce that Tasha Easton has won for her poem ÔÇÿThe FarmÔÇÖ, as I remember her poems being highly commended in a number of previous competitions'
The results of the Annual Raymond Wilson Competition are now in!
The Raymond Wilson competition gives all university staff and students the opportunity each year to write a poem for children and submit it for a prize of £200. The competition is in memory of Raymond Wilson (1925-1995), formerly Emeritus Professor of Education at the University and a well-known children's poet and anthologist himself.
The competition was won this year by Tasha Easton, Deputy Faculty Manager in the Joint Faculties Office. Her winning poem, The Farm, is published below:
The Farm
Cocks crow
Cows low
Birds tweet
Sheep bleat
Ducks quack
Chickens flap
Pigs snuffle
Mice scuffle
Donkeys bray
Horses neigh
Geese squabble
Turkeys gobble
Cats meow
Dogs growl
Farmer yawns
Day dawns.
Highly commended poems were My Best Friend, also by Tasha Easton, Mayfly by Esme Locke, and Flash Frog by Helen Newdick.
Competition Organiser, Dr Michael Lockwood of the Institute of Education, said: "A distinctive feature of the competition is that it is judged by children in a local school on National Poetry Day, and their vote carries equal weighting with that of a published children's poet, and with mine as an academic. This brings the perspectives of teacher/researcher, writer and young reader to bear on the judging."
The judges, who included 90 children from a local primary school, would like to thank everyone who entered this year. Next year's competition will be advertised at the start of the summer term.
